Plain Answers
Is a permit required to replace a door in Middletown?
Not for a same-size replacement. New Jersey's construction code counts swapping a window or door in its existing opening as ordinary maintenance, so no permit and no inspector. If you want the opening moved or made wider, that becomes framing, which does need a permit, and we will say so before anything is ordered.
Should I buy a slab or a prehung door?
A slab is the cheaper, quicker choice when the jamb is straight and the hinges are solid. A prehung unit is the right call when the frame is racked, rotted, or the door has never closed properly, because it replaces the frame and the door together. Send a photo of the door with the gap at the top visible and we will tell you which one to put in the cart.
Can a sticking door be fixed without replacing it?
Most of the time. The usual culprits are a hinge screw that let go of the jamb, a strike plate that drifted, or humidity swelling the edge, which is common in the older Bayshore capes. That is Visit-sized work, and two or three doors typically get sorted in one stop.
Do you put in smart locks and keypad deadbolts?
Yes. Battery keypad and smart deadbolts drop into a standard bore with no wiring. Video doorbells run on the existing doorbell wire or on battery. A like-for-like doorbell swap is ordinary maintenance under NJ code; pulling new wire for one is not, and we would tell you.
